What Razorpay does

Razorpay sits between your customers and the banking system, handling the complexity of payment processing so you do not have to. When a customer pays on your platform, Razorpay securely collects the funds, routes them through the appropriate payment network, and settles the amount to your bank account. You interact with Razorpay through three layers:
  • Dashboard — a web interface for managing payments, refunds, settlements, API keys, team members, and webhooks.
  • REST API — available at https://api.razorpay.com/v1, it lets you programmatically create orders, verify payments, issue refunds, and more.
  • Client-side SDKs — Razorpay Checkout (web), and mobile SDKs for Android, iOS, React Native, and Flutter embed the payment UI directly into your product.

Test Mode and Live Mode

Razorpay gives you two separate environments that share the same API surface but operate independently.
Test Mode transactions do not move real money. You can use Razorpay-provided test card numbers, UPI IDs, and netbanking credentials to simulate the full payment flow without any charges.
Never use Test Mode API keys in a production environment, and never expose your Key Secret in client-side code. Your Key Secret authenticates server-to-server requests and must be kept confidential.
You generate separate API key pairs for each mode. Switch between modes in the Dashboard using the environment toggle in the top navigation bar. When you are ready to go live, replace your rzp_test_ keys with rzp_live_ keys and complete KYC verification.
Build and test your entire integration in Test Mode before applying for KYC. This way, your integration is production-ready the moment your account is approved.
